Recap - Coaches vs. Cancer Game
Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Coaches vs. Cancer game was a huge success!!!!

The BNL vs. Columbus East Coaches vs. Cancer game on Thursday, April 23rd was an incredible event for the baseball program and this community.  The event was well planned and the committee worked hard to help raise funds and awareness to fight cancer.  The organizing committee, consisting of Keri Barker, Paige Callahan, Gary Miller, Teresa Holler and Wendy Ramsey, set a very lofty goal of raising $2,500.00.  Several ideas were implemented to help achieve the goal.  The players stepped up to help raise funds for the cause.  They sold baseball placards “In Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” to remember a family member.  Pink wooden Louisville Slugger bats were purchased for both teams to use during the game.  The Stars donned pink and grey three quarter sleeve jerseys and pink socks for the game.  Columbus East wore digital Camo uniforms for the occasion.  Both uniforms featured a backwards K with the word Cancer underneath it.  Luminaries were sold as well to raise money and to recognize a cancer survivor/fighter/patient.  Corporate sponsors also stepped up to the plate for the cause with donations.  Cancer survivors/fighters were invited out to surround the mound prior to the game.  Two of the BNL Star baseball families that suffered a recent family loss to cancer threw out the first pitch of the night.  The relay of Gary Miller to Davis to Jake was pitch number one.  Pitch number two was delivered by Logan McDonald’s grandpa Don Parker.  When the dust settled, we raised over $5,000.00 to help fight the cause.

As for the baseball game, the Stars got off to a great start taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning.  It did not go well for the Stars from then on.  The Olympians scored 12 runs over the next four innings to win the game 12-3.  While we did not achieve our goal of victory in the baseball game against Columbus East, we did exceed our goal in funds raised.  Baseball is a game.  Life and Cancer is for real and the fight must continue.  Thanks to everyone that helped make this a very special event for the BNL baseball program and the Bedford community.
